Element greater than the tolerance

Post by sribeiro » Fri Jul 14, 2023 12:59 pm

Hello!

I've been making a STKO model following one of the e-learning videos and so far everything seems to be fine, except for one error that I can't figure out what's happening.
When I run it, the following window appears (attached)

I have tried changing the tolerance values and the same error appears.

Does anyone know what I might be doing wrong?
(The file is also attached)

Thank you!

The warning about the zerolength element is not an issue. It simply reminds you that you assigned a non-zero length to a zero-length element.

The problem is that your model is singular.
There is a mistake in the bridge's beam geometry.
The geometry is a simple compound of 1 egde and multiple vertices. However, a compound is just a group (i.e. the vertices are not intersecting the edge so the piers are detached from the beam).
What you have to do now is:
  • Explode the compound geometry
  • Select the edge and vertices you obtain after exploding the compound
  • Merge them

Hello dear STKO team,

I applied your suggestion to my model but unfortunately didn't solve the problem, I continue to not be able to run the analysis.

Is there anything else I should do?

Best,
S

There is also a mistake in the self-weight.
For example, for the beam you have -7e6 N/mm.
But if the self-weight of concrete (using N and mm as units) is 2.5e-5 N/mm^3 and the area of the deck is 8e3 x 7e2 = 5.6e6 mm^2, the beam load should be -2.5e-5 N/mm^3 x 5.6e6 mm^2 = 1.4e2 N/mm

Your load seems to be 4 orders of magnitude higher.

Did I miss something?

Thank you for warning me, Yes I made a mistake on my sw calculations excel.

However, I can't still run the model, the analysis fails.

Can you share your updated model?

Sorry but there are some other errors about units I think.
The E of the uniaxial material for shear (in the section aggregator) should be the shear stiffness of the column, so it should be G*A*5/6, but you put a value close to E.
Same thing for GJ

Please, double check your model and the consistency of the unit system
