Fiber section vs Elastic Section

Post by ankurjain1992 » Thu Nov 12, 2020 3:12 pm

Sir, I prepared a model in STKO....I found the answers using both Elastic section and Fiber Section. All properties were kept same. They why am I getting variation in Modal Time Periods.

With Elastic Section, I got T1 = 1.299 seconds whereas with Fiber section I am getting T1 = 1.2444 seconds.
Also, I have verified the value T1 using Elastic section in SAP2000. The value matches exactly.

Is this any mistake in my model or it is common thing with fiber section ?

Thank you in advance.

If in the fiber section you use an elastic material (equal to E/G used in the elastic section) the responses should be equal, but only in theory. In practice, the fiber section is used to obtain an approximate solution , in fact the section is not continuous, but made of a finite number of fibers.
So, for example, the area will be equal, but the second moment of inertia will not!

Just to do a test, try to increase the number of fibers, the finer the mesh, the closer the results
