parallel displacement control (infill masonry wall)

Post by giom » Thu Apr 20, 2023 12:45 pm

Hello everyone!

I built a model of an infill masonry wall. I did the vertical analyses to check the model and it's okey. Now, I want to do the pushover analysis and for this reason I applied an horizontal load (function of the height) and I chose "parallel displacement control" in the analysis setting. I left the same the other setting.

I didn't understand why the analysis isn't completed due to an error related to ForceBeamColumn3D elements.
Can you help me?

Attached .sdc file and analysis text

There are some mistakes that I fixed in this file:

  • The model has a rigid body motion about RX... I applied a Fix in the out of plane direction. I'm assuming you are doing an analysis only in the XZ plane
  • The first analysis should be LoadControl. Furthermore you used DisplacementControl controlling the DOF 6, which is RotationZ...
  • The contact elements do not have local axes assigned. You created them , but you forgot to assign them.
Now it should work. However, You assigned Nodal Force using an equation like F/Length. Why don't you use a distributed Edge Force? (Force per unit length on the entire edge)? It would be more realistic.
Moreover, If the load is applied on the right side (as you did), impose a NEGATIVE target displacement in the DispControl analysis. Otherwise you will be PULLING the structure, instead of PUSHING it.

Thank you very much for accuracy and completeness of the answer!

I'm sorry for the mistakes, but I started recently to use STKO. I understood it and now the analysis begins.
Thank you also for the suggestion to use distributed Edge Force. It is better, right!

However, now it seems that the analysis cannot compute the softening (as you can see in the monitor). The analysis doesn't reach the end (as you can see in analysis text). What is the reason for this error? Geometry, setting analysis or other?
