Automating Bounding Cam Clay model

Post by g8star » Fri Jun 20, 2025 11:17 pm

Hi STKO,

Following up from this post: (viewtopic.php?t=2615&sid=e1ede03a24303a ... fcae8de080), I would like to automate the setup of the Bounding Cam Clay model. I've created soil properties much like I did for the single-element model, but for a small embankment over very soft soil. I would like to assign the materialState property within a tcl command. Based on the single element analysis, I believe the command to set the elastic gravity stage would be:

setParameter -val 0.0 -ele [eval getEleTags] materialState

However, I get an "invalid parameter" warning for each element and the stiffness matrix appears to have nan values. How should I setup a tcl script to set the materialState of the Bounding Cam Clay model?

My file is zipped and attached.

The warning is not a problem, it comes from the fact that the BoundingCamClay cannot handle the updateMaterialStage.
Check the possible reasons for the NAN in the convergence test. Double check your material parameters

I've updated the material properties and analyses stages to be identical to the previously discussed single-element test. It's attached for reference (ccel.zip). I've simplified the problem so that all materials consist of the BoundingCamClay nDMaterial. I also removed the updateMaterialState command. The warnings persist, and the convergence test returns nan values, despite the setup that appears to be identical to the single-element example. The updated embankment file is attached as lilemb_v2.

Do you have any other insights into convergence with the BoundingCamClay model? It’s crucial to have a practical cap plasticity model for various geotechnical applications.

I am still unable to get the Bounding Cam Clay model to work. Is there another material model with a cap yield surface suitable for Geotechnical consolidation problems? The old template3dep nDmaterial model had a Cam Clay option, but it is no longer available. What about the more recent ASDPlasticMaterial? I see a few yield surface options, but nothing that resembles a cap yield function.

Unfortunately the BoundingCamClay seems not to work, even if using the values suggested in their example.
You can try the CapPlasticity, though it's not documented
