About extraction of pile bending moment

Post by Charon » Mon Aug 21, 2023 2:47 am

Dear STKO Team,
Hi,I am using STKO for 3D numerical modeling of a pile foundation with superstructure. Now there are some questions I want to ask you guys about extracting the bending moment results of the piles.
The Physical Properties used for my piles are Elastic+BeamSectionProperty and the Element Properties are dispBeamColumn. in the Options screen of the MCPORecorder, I see a lot of options. For example, in Nodal results, there are reactionForce, reactionMoment, and in element results, there are LocalForce, section force, and for the material I am using, which one should I choose in order to correctly record and extract the bending moment results of the pile body? I would like to hear your suggestions.
Currently, in my model, when extracting the bending moment of the pile body, I choose My in section force (Lines) under Gauss plot (as shown in the attached figure). Is this extracting the correct pile bending moment results? If so, what are its units?

Best wishes,
Charon

This is correct because you are using Elastic+BeamSectionProperty, so you can monitor its internal forces in each gauss point.
If so, what are its units?
It depends on the unit you are using in your model (as you know OpenSees does not impose a unit system, you have to be consistent through your model).
For example, if you using N for forces and m for length, forces are N and bending moments are N*m

Dear STKO Team,
Hi! I have another question. In my model, there are positive and negative signs in the pile bending moments extracted as described above. What I want to know is how the positive and negative sign of the pile bending moment is defined in STKO?

Best wishes,
Charon

First, it is not about how it is defined in STKO, but in OpenSees (it's opensees that produce the results).
That being said, use the right-hand rule with the local axes of the beam
